Harvard Business School moved all in-person classes for the freshman MBA and some sophomores online this week and increased its Covid-19 testing requirements in an attempt to curb a recent increase in breakthrough cases of Covid-19 on campus.

The school is switching to distance learning until Oct. 3 to try to suppress the virus, which mainly infects fully vaccinated graduate students at the university, according to the school’s website. About 95% of the university’s students and 96% of its staff are vaccinated. More than 1,000 students are enrolled in the 2023 class of business school.

“Contact tracers who have worked with positive cases emphasize that transmission does not occur in classrooms or other academic settings on campus,” said business school spokesperson Mark Cautela in a statement.. “This does not happen among masked individuals either.”

Cautela added that the university asks students to avoid unmasked indoor events, group trips and gatherings with anyone outside their home.

The business school also imposes Covid tests three times a week for all students, regardless of their vaccination status, Cautela said. The university previously required fully vaccinated students to get tested once a week, while unvaccinated students had to submit test results twice a week.

Harvard graduate students make up the majority of active Covid cases on campus, according to the school’s online coronavirus dashboard. The university administered 41,864 Covid tests from September 20 to 25 and found that graduate students included 60 of the 74 positive Covid test results recorded during those six days.

Harvard reports that 87 students are currently in isolation following exposure to Covid, while 28 students are in quarantine. Masks remain mandatory in all indoor environments at Harvard.
