Graduate students adjust to return from in-person lessons

The return of in-person opportunities this year has provided graduate students with better classroom experiences, study routines, and a commitment to learning.

While some graduate students prefer online classes, Sydney Robbins, a sophomore pharmacy student, said she believes there is a correlation between in-person classes and academic success.

Robbins said she took all of her classes online in the past year, with the exception of one lab which only meets in person every alternate week. This year, Robbins is attending classes entirely in person.

“I think there’s a lot more student engagement,” Robbins said. “I think people are much more interested in what we learn. “

Building better relationships with faculty, meeting students in her classes and cohort, and being away from distractions at home are all reasons Robbins said she thinks face-to-face classes are better for learning. .

“When you’re in person, a professor is looking at you,” Robbins said. “They know when you’re on the phone. So that makes you both pay more attention and actually know the material. “

First-year medical student Anitra Karthic said she has the option to be in person for all of her classes this year, but has yet to attend an in-person conference.

Karthic said she watched her lectures online through Zoom while many of her classmates attended classes in person because she found her bedroom to be a better and less distracting work environment.

“I am in the comfort of my room and sitting at my desk,” Karthic said. “I’m easily distracted in a conference room because I sometimes watch what everyone else is doing on their laptop screens and for me, at least, it’s very distracting. “

Although she did not attend the lectures in person, Karthic said she believes the live lessons, whether in person or on Zoom, have helped her create a sense of routine.

“It really forced me to create this routine and create a structured schedule each day,” Karthic said. “I don’t push things off, I don’t try to squeeze everything in at the last minute, so it certainly helped me manage my time.”

Karthic said she also appreciates the many other in-person opportunities that have returned this year, such as attending club meetings, office hours and study groups at the library.

“Last year was definitely very, very difficult, but I think starting this year really made me appreciate the opportunities to do things in person,” said Karthic. “I think it definitely gave me a greater appreciation for this stuff. I really tried to make the most of that time in person as much as possible with my classmates and, you know, the teachers.
