Government launches ‘Matsya Setu’ mobile app for aquaculturists


Fisheries, Livestock and Dairy Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday launched a “Matsya Setu” mobile application to disseminate the latest freshwater aquaculture technologies to aquaculturists nationwide. The app was developed by ICAR-Central Institute for Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubaneswar, with financial support from the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad, according to an official statement.

The Matsya Setu app offers self-study online course modules by species / subject, where renowned aquaculture experts explain basic concepts and hands-on demonstrations on breeding, seed production and cultivation of grow out of commercially important fish such as carp, catfish, scampi, murres, ornamental fish and pearl culture.

Best management practices for maintaining soil and water quality, nutrition and health management in aquaculture operations have also been provided in the course platform.

Modules are divided into small video chapters for the convenience of learners, along with additional learning material.

To motivate learners and provide a lively learning experience, quiz / test options have also been offered for self-assessment.

After successfully completing each course module, an electronic certificate can be generated automatically. Farmers can also raise their doubts through the app and get specific advice from experts.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that capacity building of fish farmers is an essential part of spearheading the development of technology-driven aquaculture in the country.

He said the app will definitely be helpful for farmers to learn advancements in technology and best management practices at their convenience.
