After surpassing 40,000 students in 2020, Texas Tech now has 40,666 enrolled on the 20th day of class on Monday, the university said this week.

Graduate enrollment has increased by over 4%. Texas Tech has also continued to raise the academic profile of the student body, aided by growing scholarships.
“The demand for a Texas Tech degree has never been greater,” said Tech president Lawrence Schovanec. “Our continued growth and the quality and demographics of our student body are testament to the academic strength of our university, the success of our alumni, and the power of the Texas Tech brand. We have always focused on academic quality and access, and this year’s course reflects both of these priorities.
Over 24% of this year’s new freshmen finished in the top 10% of their high school class, a 6% increase from 2020. The class also includes 34 National Merit Scholar finalists and over 3 500 Presidential Merit Fellows, both numbers representing a doubling over the past five years.
More than 3,000 new students are the first in their families to pursue a college education. The new class also includes nearly 2,000 Pell-eligible students. The significant increase in these student populations reflects Texas Tech’s priorities to support first-generation students while fostering greater social mobility.
“I am proud of every member of our varsity community who works hard to create a friendly and welcoming environment for new Red Raiders,” said Jamie Hansard, vice president of registration management. “Their tireless work in recruiting students and supporting their success is evidenced by our continued success in enrollment, retention and graduation rates. “
